Ski Tellurhide
It seems that wherever there are mountains where snow falls on an annual basis someone will come around and try to open a ski resort. Skiing is one of those sports that is practiced by a lot of people but only mastered by a few. Still if you are looking for a place to ski, Tellurhide is perhaps one of the most interesting places to go try out the slopes. While the town has not been that famous for all too long, it has been around for quite some time and people are finally discovering what was once called Colorado's Best Kept Secret. That is not such a surprising moniker once you know that the town has three ways to get there but only two ways to get out. The roads are rather treacherous mountain passes that require some 4X4 assistance for the inexperienced, to say the least. Even though the town has an airport, flights are few because of the short runway and the weather that makes getting to the town a bit tricky - even for experienced pilots. But despite being hard to get to, once you have reached it, it was well worth the effort. It does not matter whether you want to relax or ski, Tellurhide it the place for you.
The town of Tellurhide, like most town in Colorado, started out as a mining town in 1856 when gold was discovered in the hills surrounding the town. For a long time the town's only export were various kinds of ore with it only import being mining families all hoping to make their fortune in the rich hills surrounding the town. As the mining started to dry up, however, the first movement towards creating a ski resort was started in about 1972. The slopes were slowly being formed as the mining families decided to leave the area of richer hills and the vacuum was filled up with people looking for a beautiful place to stay. The skiing industry had a rocky start, to say the least, but after ten or so years of struggling the town suddenly became a place to go if you wanted to ski. Tellurhide, however, has more to offer than just the slopes.
If you want to ski, Tellurhide is the place, but the town also offers other diversions to those that make their way to the town. There is an annual film festival and an annual music festival that has tourists flocking to the town every year. Even outside of winter the hotels are often booked since the surrounding area has beautiful scenery and worthwhile hiking trails. Tellurhide is more than just a skiing town. There is something to do all year round and people have started noticing it. Even if skiing is not your thing then why not come up and see what the town has to offer. All good things are hard to get to and Tellurhide certainly takes that statement and makes it true. But, once you get here you may never want to leave again. |
