Telluride Homes

Situated in Colorado, the town of Telluride is a Home Rule Municipality and is the most populous town of San Miguel County. Telluride is a former mining area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is nestled on the San Miguel River in the San Juan Mountains. Telluride is surrounded by steep mountains and cliffs and many historic ruins of mining projects are dotted around the cliffs.

The U.S. Census 2000 puts the population of Telluride at 2,221 people. This means that a Telluride home is perfect for a family who enjoys small-town living or even a holiday house for ski holidays. The close community ensures a welcoming atmosphere and an ideal place to raise children. In the past, Telluride gained the reputation as 'Colorado's Beat Kept Secret' which ironically made the town quite famous.

A gondola connects Telluride with the next door town of Mountain Village, which is situated on the other side of the ridge. Telluride is home to the Telluride film festival and has been used as a backdrop for many television commercials. What differentiates Telluride from resorts like Aspen is its Wild West history (Butch Cassidy famously robbed the San Miguel Valley Bank in Telluride in 1889). Its Wild West image and festivals are a huge attraction for tourists and even for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise.

Having a home in Telluride means that one can ski to their heart's content in the winter and spring, as the town is famous for its exceptional skiing and alpine forests. The town is soon to be home to a luxury resort complex that will contend even the best of those of Aspen and Vail. In the summer, horse back riding in the mountains is a popular past time as magnificent sights of the San Juan Mountains can be seen. People with homes in Telluride will attest to its beautiful colors during the fall.

Once the mining industry in Telluride was exhausted, the town turned to the service industry and Telluride's first ski lift was installed in 1972 by Telluride Ski Resort. Younger people set up homes in Telluride for its casual life style and many outdoor activities. Besides skiing, inhabitants enjoy such activities as hang gliding, mountain climbing and kayaking.

Telluride's remoteness is what makes the resort special since skiers from the big cities can't reach the resort by car. This means that there are shorter lift lines and one gets a more exclusive experience. There is still a need for the town to stay small and beautiful and to not become as commercial as other Colorado ski resorts. The distinct character and charm and the magnificent surroundings of the town make a home in Telluride valuable.
